'If music be the food of love...' isn't something you might normally expect from an election blog. But here are five tunes that get me in the mood for canvassing!
As a teenager I was a huge fan of Deep Purple and Simon & Garfunkel. Many years later I discovered Boston, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits. As I get older I'm REdiscovering artists and enjoying their music - we all know Baker Street, but I'd never taken much notice of Gerry Rafferty's other songs. But Family Tree and Days Gone Down are masterpieces I missed when he was alive.
“Some people like songs because of the lyrics. With me it has to be musically interesting first”
Modern pop music is like fast food. I enjoy it tremendously but I know it's made to a commercial recipe and every producer is copying everyone else. But sometimes a Big Mac just hits the spot when you don't have time to prepare a fillet steak!
Five songs then. It could be fifty!
In no particular order:
* Roll With The Changes - REO Speedwagon
* Fanfare For The Common Man - Emerson Lake and Palmer
* This Woman's Work - Kate Bush
* Halleluja - Leonard Cohen (although the Alexandra Burke version is more lush)
* On The Turning Away - Pink Floyd
